Winton Queensland Australia

DAY 179 Wednesday 18 July WEEK 27.

Back onto the dangerous rough road heading for Winton. Took things slowly and carefully as we had yesterday.

Road continued to have huge holes everywhere. There were lots of dead Kangaroos along the roadside. Australian animals do not fare well crossing a busy highway. The poor things.

Queensland Australia outback plains

outback plains

The scenery was quite nice, flat grassy plains, very dry, low shrubby trees.

Every now and then, there were beautiful sections of red earth and big outcrops of boulders on the side of the road. There was a section where they had blasted through one of these outcrops to get the road through.

Queensland Australia outback gorge

gorge between hughenden and winton

We saw the railway track built through a huge red earth cutting, with beautiful silvery grey grass growing along the sides of the track. The contrast in colors, the bright red earth and the silvery grass, in the sunshine, looked like a beautiful outback watercolor.

In he middle of nowhere, there was a deep Gorge, with reddy orange boulders. We stopped at the lookout there, it was amazing.

All along this road, known as Australia's Dinosaur Trail, there were Flood Level Posts on the bridges. The level went up to 2 meters at bridge level!

It was hard to imagine these flat dry plains to be prone to floods. It was so dry, but they do have them.
