Super Pit Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Paddy Hannan discovered the first gold that triggered the great Western Australia Gold Rush. The Golden Mile evolved from this discovery, but it is now known as The Super Pit. Looking down into it one can see why.
the super pit - note the size of the trucks compared to the cars
We drove up to the viewing area; it was very windy. The Pit is enormous and we could see the huge trucks working below. These looked really small, until we saw a ute and ordinary sized truck drive past them - these looked tiny against the giant carry trucks - see video above.
looking down from the viewing platform.
The giant trucks are Caterpillars and it costs $26,000 to replace each tyre. We watched below, where the big scooper machines dumped the rubble into the trucks. These then took the rubble off to be worked, winding their way up and around the narrow road to the top. It is hard to imagine that it takes seven of these big loads to get just one small nugget.

Looking down into the Pit, you can see may colors, textures, terraces and winding roads. It looks like a hot dusty place to work.
