Melbourne Victoria Australia. When she settles herself on top of the little birds, she squashes them down and wriggles about until she completely covers them with her body.
This ritual is really funny to watch and takes quite a while. There is always a head or wing or a foot sticking out somewhere before she manages to shove them down further in the nest.
squash down time baby - get ya head down!
The little birds are hungry all the time. They seem to be fed constantly. Between feeds, they lie down in the nest and sleep for a short time, groggy and with bulging tummies.
Then in about 5-10 mins, they are awake again, with big gaping mouths waiting to be fed. The size of their open mouths has doubled this week.
they now fill the nest
They are completely covered with light and dark gray feathers, speckled on their breast. There will not be any room in the nest soon.
They have been stretching their wings often too, something they haven't done much until now. I wonder when they will be ready to fly.
DAY 300 Friday 16 November
Our little blackbirds have left the nest. Looked out the kitchen window this morning and the nest was empty. We can hear them chirping away in the pittostrum tree at the front door, so we know they are safe.
The parent blackbirds are still feeding them up in the tree. I guess they will be having flying lessons today! Go little birdies Go!
