Through the window, one of the kids spotted a small green egg in the nest when it was unoccupied. Mother bird still not sitting on the nest all day. When she flies off, the male stands next to it till she returns.
Note; All the pics of the nest have been taken through the kitchen window and fly screen, so are not top quality. We don't want to disturb the little family by approaching the nest or opening the kitchen window.
mother blackbird and nest are well camouflaged
DAY 283 Tuesday 30th October
Spotted two tiny birds with their beaks open being fed by the parent birds. Mother blackbird sitting on them nearly all day, but flies off now and then to get food. Has been feeding them big juicy worms. The parent blackbirds gather several worms in their beak - can see the worms wriggling and stretching. Ewwww.
The little birds are orange in color with no feathers, about 2" long and their eyes are closed; they are extremely ugly. They lie low in the nest and keep very still when they are left alone.
the 2nd baby bird - pink one on the right
The above picture is not very clear - it was taken very quickly through the window and fly wire. Can just make out the new bald pink baby on the right.
Day 287 Saturday 3 November
Melbourne and Victoria are awash. Pouring rain solidly all night and the next day. There has been extensive flooding in some areas in Vic.
We were worried that the nest and the baby birds would be washed away, but they are still there. Very bedraggled looking, but ok thank goodness.
DAY 289 Monday 5th November
For the first time, the Melbourne Cup Parade through the city went ahead without any horses!! Due to the horse flu risk.
The little birds are growing fast and have a couple of fluffy grayish feathers. Light rain this morning, ground still very wet. Warmed up late afternoon.
