Hughenden to Wington road

DAY 178 Tuesday 17 July.

Hughenden. Camped overnight at Corfield - in the middle of nowhere - between Hughenden and Winton. Off again early, it was freezing. We had to get our jeans, jumpers and boots out for the first time in 7 months traveling. Winter had caught up with us at last.

Well, the road from Hughenden to Winton - A2 - was horrific to say the least. It was narrow; the sides had been destroyed by the road trains. These are big Semi Trailers and are used in Outback Australia to transport goods across long, mostly uninhabited distances. These big trucks pull two or more trailers - making them very long and heavy. So beware.

We saw a few big red and white Australia Post trucks and I wondered what it must have been like living in the Australian Outback without any postal system in the old Colony days.

Big chunks of the road side had been destroyed and huge deep tyre tracks had been left. Most of the road had dangerously deep holes in it, if not, very rough patches. Wherever possible we had to drive in the middle of the road because it was so damaged - there was a sign saying to do this.

It was an extremely rough ride and the 5th wheel was shaken up in side. Cupboard doors and drawers that have never come open while traveling before, were all agape with spilled contents all over the place.

Luckily we only came across a couple of road trains passing on the other side of the road. Fortunately the road was ok to move over to the side at the time. I hate to imagine what would have happened if we could not move over, as most of the side of the road was covered in huge bog holes, or dangerously steep ditches.
