Cobar - Heritage Museum

DAY 201 Thursday 9 August continued.

Cobar NSW. Then off back into town to visit the Old Heritage Building - the Information Center and Mining Museum.

The Great Cobar Copper Mine Office NSW

the great copper mine office

This lovely old brick building was built in 1910 and was the Office of the The Great Copper Mine.

It is a sturdy brick structure, and remains in good condition. It has a beautiful staircase inside, and the front verandah was really attractive, with patterned, pressed tin ceiling. It must be lovely and cool under this wide verandah in the summer heat.

The building now stands on its own, only the slag heaps remain. But in the old days, the mine (started in 1880) was right next door to the Office. When the mine closed down and they left the town, the Copper Mine sold the building to the local Shire for $1 - true story!

There was an interesting object at the back of the building, see if you can guess what it was before you read further - see pic below.

Outback pantry Coberg NSW Australia

can you guess?

This trunk from a Brimble Box tree, was turned into a pantry, with hinges and very thick door. How ingenious! It was used at a cattle station in their outback bush kitchen. The early Australian folk were certainly inventive with the limited resources they had.
