Charleville. The huge entrance doors to the Hotel Foyer were very elaborate, surrounded by beautiful stained glass leadlight opening into a small foyer. Here, were two more beautiful doors with big bronze handles.
The big marble step to the entrance has been worn from all the traffic into the hotel. Hotel Corones used to be inlaid in the marble the step, but because of the wear over time, only the H at the beginning and s at the end remain.
the beautiful marble floor
As you walked into the big foyer, the whole place just made you gasp. It was so beautiful. The staircase, the marble floor, the beautiful windows, the elaborate ceiling.
It was like walking into a time warp and felt like people in lovely 40's or 50's clothes would come bursting through the doors any minute.

We were told a funny story that reflects the character of Poppa Corones. And it goes like this; In Australia, women were not allowed by law to enter the pub and drink at the bar.
Therefore Poppa Corones devised a cunning plan. He built a little room in the corner of the foyer, called the Ladies 'Writing' Room. It had desks and typewriter and the ladies could come in and sit in the little room and 'write' to their hearts content!!

There was a little bell on the desk, and the ladies would ring the bell. They were served their drinkies, brought in on a tray, from the main bar in the next room. This is how the crafty bugga got around the law and of course, made some more money. There are many of these wonderful stories about ol Poppa Harry and his magnificent Hotel in Charleville.
