Charleville - Hotel Corones - The Great Flood of 1990

DAY 192 Tuesday 1 August continued.

Charleville. This magnificent hotel was built to very high standards and to Poppa Corones strict code of quality. He used the best of everything.

some of the beautiful original windows in foyer

The floors were covered in 4" marble tiles shipped from Italy. The wall and decorative tiles and the stain glass, leadlight windows, shipped from England.

All this was done in the early 1920's. It is quite incredible to find such an elaborate, top quality hotel here in Outback Queensland.

The furniture and timber paneling around the foyer was Australian native silky oak, very beautiful. The ceilings were elaborate and made of horse hair and plaster.

the foyer and the actual water level during the big flood - tone would be underwater!

During the 1990 flood, the water level rose to above the mantelpiece in the foyer - well over 5'. You can see in the pic above, Tone standing under flood level. The hotel was so well built, it sustained minimal damage.

We sat on the original sofas during the talk, and the feet were elaborately carved in the shape of claws. These sofas were immmersed in the 1990 flood and had been re-stuffed and covered. They were originally stuffed with horse hair.
