Cassowaries: All packed up and off to Tully area - Hull Heads camping ground. Raining, raining raining.

Tully had the reputation of being Australia's wettest town. It certainly lived up to its reputation!! Rained all day and was a very grey dull wet drive.

Could not see any scenery on either side of the car or in front of us. We made it to the grounds, unhitched and ran inside. Still raining.

Seemed to subside a little, later in the afternoon, just soft misty rain - the Scotland sort. So we drove around to South Mission Beach through the Cassowaries Bird Conservation area Australia.

Cassowarie, endangered flightless bire, australia queensland rain forest

These birds are an endangered species and one of Australia's two large flightless birds. The other being the Emu. There were signs everywhere as reminders, look out for these birds, as they frequently strolled across the busy road.

Talk about lucky, we spotted one walking along the edge of the forest and managed to get some photos.

It was a very big solid bird indeed and stood tall and erect. A sharp horn on its head and vicious spikes on the back of each foot was a good sign - never get close.

Black shiny feathers, its head coloring a mixture of vivid bright blue, red and white, long red wattles dangling from its neck.

Mission Beach South was beautiful, but raining, raining!! Will have to go back again if the sun comes out. Can only stay at our camping spot for 3 days so keeping our fingers crossed for some sunshine.
