Blackall - Woolscour Shed

DAY 185 Tuesday 24 July.

Blackall Queensland. This town was the first in Australia to drill an artesian bore. They have a naturally heated artesian spa and pool here.

The water in Blacky smells of sulfur, but tastes good. It is also naturally heated and drawn from the Great Artesian Basin. There is no need to use the hot water tap here, the cold is lovely and warm, 58 degrees in town.

Blackall Woolscour Shed Queensland Australia

historic woolscour shed

A short distance out of town, past the Sale Yards, is the Historic Woolscour Shed. Wool Scouring actually meant wool cleaning. This place is an important part of our early Australian culture and history.

The shed opened in 1908 and operated for 70 years, closing in 1978, the end of the wool boom. This lovely old building and machinery have been lovingly restored by dedicated locals, to working order again and is a credit to all concerned.

It is the only shed like it left in Australia, therefore very precious.

The machinery was steam powered and the water supply provided by a free flowing artesian bore – the original still working today - see video below.

The local timber used to fire the huge boilers was from the native gidyea tree. This timber burned to high temperatures quickly, and was also used for posts, fences and framework for the shed.

They must have cut down many hundreds of trees back then. The surrounding area is quite void of trees. The original wood used has lasted for over 100 years. Continued on next page.
