We were looking out for a public dump point for our black water, on the way. It was supposed to be 12 kms before Mackay, we missed it and had to turn around. Quick easy dump and off again.
The scenery after Mackay was beautiful. Started looking tropical now. There were lots of lovely pointy hills, palm trees and thick green foliage. An enormous array of bright flowers and trees. Big daisy plants, with huge bright yellow flowers were growing all over the roadside, making massive patches of brilliant yellow - no they weren't sunflowers!
Also hugh trees with small dark green glossy leaves and bunches of rubbery, vivid orangy-red flowers. We thought these must be the 'Flame Trees' that grow up here - must check.

The cane fields were all around and quite high. It was nearly time to cut them. There was a big sign at one of the towns - "Pre Cut Bash Party - before they cut the sugar cane.
There were feathery cream coloured fronds, a bit like pampas grass on top of the cane. They swayed in the wind in waves, rippling across the fields, as far as the eye could see. They looked beautiful.

When we got to Airlie Beach, the scenery was just wonderful, the beautiful hills, the sparkling water, the islands in the distance.
This was what I thought Queensland would look like, but has not until now. Continued on next page.
